Patriots Win at Loch Lloyd

Patriot Senior Adam Johnson
The Christ Prep Patriot golf team accomplished something Thursday afternoon that it had not been able to do for the better part of the past three seasons--beat rival Kansas City Christian (KCC). The Patriots overcame cold, damp conditions to tally a combined score of 164 en route to the victory in a quad meet with KCC, Barstow, and Truman.

The 9-hole match was contested on the par 35 front side of Loch Lloyd, which measures approximately 3,125 from the white tees. Following the Patriots 164 mark were KCC with 171, Truman with 177, and Barstow at 199.

CPA senior Adam Johnson led the Patriots with a 3-over-par 38. Adam shared medalist honors with Joseph Lambert of KCC and a Truman golfer. The rest of the Patriots followed close behind. Adam's brother Joey Johnson shot 41, while Patriots Nolan Becerra, Timothy Finley, and Logan Routh shot 42, 43, & 45, respectively.

Next up for the Patriots will be the always-competitive Grain Valley Invitational this coming Monday, April 4. Christ Prep will put five varsity and five junior varsity players in the Grain Valley event, which is slated for a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. Monday morning. Check back Monday evening for the results of that competition.

The Christ Prep Patriot golf team opened its 2011 season this afternoon as 16 players traveled to Archie, Mo. to compete in a quad meet at Blackberry Trails Golf Course. The Patriots put two teams in action at the meet against squads from Drexel (Mo.), Butler (Mo.) and the host Archie Whirlwinds.

The Drexel Bobcats' varsity team tallied the best overall score with a 160 total for its top four players. CPA's junior varsity team came in second (163) while its varsity squad totalled 174 and came in third. Butler and Archie finished 4th and 5th at 177 and 219, respectively.

Christ Prep had three golfers shoot below 40 on the par 34, 1,913 yard Blackberry Trails layout. Patriot  junior Joey Johnson was medalist with a 2-over-par 36 while sophomore Timothy Finley shot a 4-over 38. Newcomer and freshman Nolan Becerra carded a 5-over 39.

Other notable Patriot performances included a pair of debut 43s from senior Sam Aldrich (making an excellent transition from baseball) and 7th grader Nelson Searcy. Also impressive was a 42 carded by newcomer freshman Garrett Routh.

CPA will send another squad to Archie next Tuesday to play against the same four teams. The top five varsity players will travel to Loch Lloyd C.C. March 31 to take on Barstow, Kansas City Christian and Truman.
