Christ Prep golfer Phoebe Finley snagged 5th place over the weekend in the Sunflower Girls Championship in Lawrence, Kansas. Finley shot an opening round 79 yesterday on the 5,500 yard Eagle Bend Golf Course, the host venue for the event.

The tournament was slated for a concluding 18 holes today, but persistent morning rains rendered the course unplayable. The Kansas Golf Association consequently decided that yesterday's results from field would stand.

The tournament champion was Baile Winslow of Overland Park (St. Thomas Aquinas High) who shot a 3-over 75. Winslow, who is heading to play golf at the University of Northern Colorado this fall,  won the inaugural Sunflower Girls Championship two years ago.  Following Winslow was Emma Whitaker of Wichita who shot a 5-over par 77 to claim 2nd place. Kylie McCarthy of Manhattan and Nicole McCurdy of Overland Park both shot 78s to tie for 3rd place.  Follow this link to view the entire leaderboard:

Finley was the only golfer from Missouri in the 29 player field. She is also thought to be the only girl in the field which plays high school golf on a boys team.

Finley’s 75, Massing’s Double Eagle Pace Patriots

It was well worth the wait. Although rain, snow, and wind chills last Thursday forced postponement of the CPA Invitational, the tournament was rescheduled for yesterday and the conditions could hardly have been better at Ironhorse Golf Club in Leawood, Kans. Christ Prep, although shorthanded, capitalized and delivered its third consecutive victory in the event by posting a combined score of 340. Kansas City Christian was second with a 371 while Sunrise of Wichita and Blue Ridge Christian of Kansas City followed up with 403 and 457, respectively.

The day was highlighted by personal bests and career shots. Timothy Finley was first place medalist, shooting a personal best 3-over 75.  Especially noteworthy was sophomore Sawyer Massing’s double eagle on the par 5 14th hole. Massing holed out a six iron from about 175 yards. He then followed up with a birdie on 15, concluding a two hole stretch at 4-under-par. Sawyer finished the day at 5-over 77—also a personal best—which  was good enough for second place. And to boot for Sawyer—his double eagle got him some ink in the Kansas City Star.

Christ Prep was missing its normal numbers 3 and 5—Garrett Routh and Jacob Bishoff, but other Patriots stood in the gap and contributed to the team’s efforts. Nolan Becerra was fourth place with an 85. Regan Hurley added a 103 (tied for 10th Place) while Phoebe Finley shot a 104. Sierra Massing was forced to withdraw because of a knee injury.  Justin McGee also competed for the Patriots.

Christ Prep travels to Springfield, Mo. today in preparation for the National Christian Homeschool Championships to be held tomorrow and Friday at Rivercut Golf Course. Stay tuned for progress reports from that event.

Patriots Perform Well in Two Events

JV Team Poses at Eagle Bend
The Christ Prep Patriots sent both a varsity and JV team to meets in two states yesterday and returned home with good results.  CPA's varsity traveled to Loch Lloyd C.C. to play in a dual match against Barstow. Although the Patriots lost the match 166-177, some good scores were turned in by Nolan Becerra (40), Sawyer Massing (43), and Garrett Routh 44. Becerra's 40 was good enough for 2nd, just behind Barstow's 39.

The JV traveled to Eagle Bend G.C. in Lawrence, Kansas where they competed in the Veritas JV Invitational. Christ Prep was second in the tournament behind Cornerstone of Topeka. Phoebe Finley won the individual competition with a ten-over 46 on the nine hole front side. Sierra Massing shot 53 for the Patriots which was good enough for 6th Place. Regan Hurley was close behind with a 54 while newcomer Justin McGee shot a respectable 63.

Routh, Patriots Dominate Cypress Ridge

On what was the first clear day in recent memory, the Christ Prep Patriot golf team rained down personal bests on the Sycamore Ridge Golf Club in Topeka, Kansas today en route to a solid victory at the Cornerstone Invitational.

The Patriots were short-handed, missing Nolan Becerra and Sawyer Massing, but the scores did not show it as the top four players combined for a 341, 13 strokes ahead of 2nd Place and host Cornerstone.

Individually, the Patriots showed up with at least four personal bests. Junior Garrett Routh led the way with a 9-over-par 79--the best score of his career. Garrett's score was good enough for 2nd Place, just one stroke behind the winner Josiah Packard from Cornerstone. Timothy Finley came in 3rd with an 83 while Jacob Bishoff's personal best 84 won him 4th Place.  The remaining three Patriots played solid rounds. Sierra Massing turned in a 102 while Phoebe Finley and Regan Hurley turned in their own career best scores of 95 and 99, respectively.

Following CPA and Cornerstone were Sunrise Christian Academy of Wichita, which locked in 3rd Place with a 381. Following Sunrise were Blue Ridge Christian (410) and Veritas Christian (Lawrence, Kansas) with a 459.

The Patriots will compete in two nine hole meets tomorrow. The varsity travels to the Village of Loch Lloyd to compete in a dual meet with Barstow while the JV travels to Eagle Bend G.C. in Lawrence for the Veritas JV Invitational.

Stay tuned for results of these tournaments.

Patriots Win Team, Individual Titles at Alvamar

While not quite as miraculous as the parting of the Red Sea, the Christ Prep Patriot golf team was the recipient of a five hour window of playable weather yesterday in Lawrence, Kansas and took advantage of the unexpected blessing by winning the Veritas Invitational by an eight stroke margin.

CPA played the 6100 yard, par 72 Alvamar public side in a total of 343 strokes, bettering 2nd place Kansas City Christian by an eight shot margin. Cornerstone of Topeka finished 3rd with a 396.

The Patriots claimed three top ten medals. Timothy Finley led all players with a five-over-par 77, two shots ahead of Kansas City Christian's Christian Bickley.  Christ Prep's Nolan Becerra tied for third with an 85 while the Patriots' Garrett Routh tied for 5th with an 86. Sawyer Massing added a 91 and Jacob Bishoff carded a 95 for Christ Prep. Phoebe Finley added a 98 while Regan Hurley and Sierra Massing rounded out the CPA roster with respectable efforts.

Christ Prep returns to action early Saturday morning at the Osawatomie Invitational in Osawatomie, Kansas.

Patriots 7th, Finley Tied for 2nd at Hayden

The Christ Prep Patriot golf team traveled to the Hayden Invitational Monday where the biggest opponent might have been the weather. The Patriots traversed the 6384 yard, par 72 Village Greens course under frigid temperatures and uncomfortable wind chills, both of which have come to define the 2013 season.

CPA placed 7th in the 12 team field with a team total 347, but only 23 strokes separated the top nine teams in what ended up being a very competitive tournament.

The team results are as follows:

1Hayden Blue 329
2Mill Valley 332
3Lansing 333
4Piper 336
5Pembroke Hill 343
6Ottawa 344
7Christ Prep347
8Tonganoxie350
9DeSoto 352
10KC Christian 363
11Hayden Gold 368
12Basehor 380

The individual competition proved to be tight as well, as only five strokes separated the top ten competitors. Timothy Finley led CPA with a 6-over 78, which was good enough for a tie for 2nd. Austin Williams of DeSoto led all individuals with a 4-over 76. Garrett Routh added an 87 for CPA, while Sawyer Massing contributed a 90.

The Patriots played yesterday at the Veritas Invitational (results to follow) and will compete in the Osawatomie Inv. this coming Saturday in what will prove to be another competitive contest.

Stay tuned for results from these events.
