Patriot Joey Johnson Signs With Missouri State

Joey Johnson
Christ Prep Patriot golfer Joey Johnson recently signed a Letter of Intent to play collegiate golf at Missouri State University (MSU) in Springfield, Mo.  Johnson, in his senior year with CPA, will enter MSU next August and will compete for the Bears during the team's 2012-13 season.

Joey's signing capped off a great 2011 amateur golf season. After dominating many of his high school tournaments with Christ Prep, he participated in many junior events regionally and nationally during the summer. His 2011 highlights included placing fourth in the Missouri Junior Championships and a 5th Place finish in the prestigious Bass Pro Shops/Payne Stewart Invitational held at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield. This latter event was part of the American Junior Golf Association tour, a circuit that fields the very best junior golfers in the world. Joey's 2011 season followed a stellar 2010 effort in which he placed 2nd in the Missouri Junior.

Missouri State is a Division I school which competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. MSU head golf coah Neal Stafford said in a news release regarding Joey: "Joey's an all-around solid guy with an even temper and a smooth golf swing," said Stafford. "He's a great athlete and a tough competitor."

Joey is the son of Brad and Caryl Johnson and the younger brother of Missouri Southern State Univ. golfer Adam Johnson.

Rain Cancels Day Two of Nationals

The Christ Prep Patriots played about 8 holes Friday before thunderstorms in the Springfield area halted play at the National Christian Homeschool Golf Championships held at Rivercut Golf Course.  The players were brought of the course about 10:15 a.m. when lightning was spotted in the area. After an almost four hour delay the tournament was finally cancelled and awards were given based on the 18 hole scores from Day 1.

It appeared both the Patriot team and Joey Johnson (-2 after four holes) were making up some ground when play was halted. As a result, the Patriot team settled for third place overall and Joey received the second place medal for his efforts Thursday in shooting a 3-over 75.

The Patriots who participated in Springfield were Sierra Massing, Phoebe Finley, Garrett Routh, Logan Routh, Nolan Becerra, Adam Johnson, Joey Johnson, and Timothy Finley.

Check back with us later as we'll try to post some photos from Nationals.

The Christ Prep Patriots shot a 325 yesterday en route to an impressive victory in the afternoon session of the William Jewell Invitational in Liberty, Mo. The Patriots placed three in the top five individual medals, led by Joey Johnson's 2-under par 70 on the Cardinal Hill Golf Course.

Joey was followed in second place by brother Adam (80) while Nolan Becerra shot 84 which was good enough for 4th Place. The Patriots were followed in second and third places by Harrisonville and Lexington.

Joey's score of 70 was by far the low round for both the morning and afternoon sessions. His mark beat even the Mizzou-bound and Kearney High golfer Ryan Zech's morning post of 4-over 76. Joey brought the Cardinal Hill track to its knees with laser-like iron play and outstanding putting.

Patriots Sweep Honors at Blue Ridge

CPA "Blue"
The Christ Prep Patriots sent two golf teams and 14 players to the Blue Ridge Christian Invitational today in Kansas City. The two teams finished 1-2 and the Patriots claimed 5 of 6 individual medals at the 18 hole event, held at the Royal Meadows Golf Club.

CPA brought two equally divided "split squad" teams to the tournament. In addition to the main tournament, which took the four best scores among the two teams' rosters, the Patriots held their own grudge match between the two CPA teams--"Patriot Blue" vs. "Patriot Red."

The Patriot Blue team consisted of Joey Johnson, Darren Wallace, Logan Routh, Jordan Uebelein, Sierra Massing, Phoebe Finley, and Nelson Searcy. The Patriot Red team was comprised of Adam Johnson, Timothy Finley, Jacob Bishoff, Jacob Bronars, Drew Langston, Sawyer Massing, and Judah Brown.

Patriot Blue defeated Patriot Red 332-362  in the overall Blue Ridge tournament, where the best four scores from each of the teams' seven players were tallied. However, in the CPA version of the match, all seven scores were added together. With that format Patriot Red beat Patriot Blue by a score of 688 to 724. In the end, Patriot Red received the winners trophy but Patriot Blue received pizza.

As stated previously, CPA golfers won 5 of the 6 medals awarded for individual scores.  Joey Johnson was overall medalist with a 2-over-par 72. Logan Routh tied for second with a 79 while Adam Johnson, Darren Wallace, and Timothy Finley placed 4th, 5th, and 6th with scores of 83, 86, and 87, respectively.

The Patriot varsity gets back into action next Monday, April 11 at the Blue Springs South Invitational at Lakewood Oaks. The JV travels that same day to the Veritas Invitational in Lawrence, Kans.
