Patriots Place Fourth at Nationals

The Christ Prep golf team gave a few strokes back to the field during second round action, but retained its 4th Place position at the National Christian Homeschool Golf Championships yesterday in Springfield, Mo. Unfortunately most of the Patriots carded higher scores than those delivered Thursday, the lone exception being Timothy Finley who shot 85.  The Patriots' combined to shoot 327 Friday. Paired with their Thursday tally of 320, their 36 hole total added up to 647.  That mark was well behind team champion North State (North Carolina) which shot a 608. The Oklahoma City Storm rallied a bit and moved from third to second place after day two. The Storm's 627 put them 11 strokes ahead of the THESA (Ft. Worth) Riders for second place honors. THESA's 338 bettered Christ Prep by nine strokes for third. The tournament was played on the blue tees at Rivercut Golf Course.

Individually, Joey Johnson was the lone Patriot in the top ten. Joey carded a four-over 76 Friday, which combined with his 1-under 71 Thursday for a 36 hole total of 147. That mark was good enough for 6th Place at the Championships. The overall champion was Brad Dalke of THESA who shot 141 (71-70).

In the Girls Division, Patriot freshman Phoebe Finley shot a 197 (91-106) to claim Third Place. She followed Rebecka Goodwin (OKC Storm) who was first with 180 (90-90). Rebecka narrowly edged Sidney Willis of Ft. Wayne Indiana who claimed second place with a 181 (92-89).

On a lesser note, Timothy Finley won the pre-tournament chipping contest. Phoebe Finley was second in the girls long drive competition. Phoebe drove a range ball 218 yards but was edged by Mariah Hopkins who sent one sailing some 237 yards.

The tournament provided the best assemblage of talent that Christ Prep saw during the entire 2012 season. Several participants will attend college on golf scholarships. Notables include Dalke, who committed to Oklahoma at age 12, and Mariah Hopkins of North State. Mariah is female golfer who placed 8th in the boys division with a 151. She will attend Western Carolina University next year. The Patriots own Joey Johnson will be attending Missouri State Univ. in the fall.

The Homeschool Nationals concluded the Patiot golf careers of Joey Johnson and Logan Routh. The CPA seniors competed three years for the Patriot varsity, playing 1 and/or 2 much of that time. While Joey moves on to MSU, we may very well see Logan playing for a smaller college in the area.  Each of these young men will be sorely missed.

Patriots 4th on Day One of Nationals

The Christ Prep Patriots faced their stiffest competition of the season today during Day One of the National Christian Homeschool National Championships at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo.  CPA posted a very respectable team total of 320, but found themselves behind three other teams on the leaderboard.

The Patriots' mark was twenty strokes higher than the 300 returned by leader North State's (North Carolina) 300. The THESA (Ft. Worth, Tx.) Riders posted a 313 which was good enough for 2nd Place while the Oklahoma City Storm was 3rd with a 318.

Joey Johnson posted the best score for the Patriots. His one-under 71 was good enough for a 3rd Place tie with Brad Dalke of Texas. The pair were three strokes behind Miles Adell of SW Missouri who posted a four-under 68. Adell leads Wyatt Larkin of Georgia who shot a 2-under 70 and holds 2nd Place by himself.  Other notable scores for Christ Prep includes Logan Routh's 79 and  Nolan Becerra's 80.

Championship play concludes tomorrow with another 18 hole round at Rivercut. Action begins with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.

Patriots Win At Alvamar; Second at Osawatomie

After their varsity win at Hayden on April 16, the Christ Prep Patriots traveled to two other invitationals at which they came away with trophies for first and second place.
CPA competed in the Veritas Invitational on April 18 at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence. CPA won that event despite being without top golfer Joey Johnson. The Patriots combined for a team total 337 to take top team honors. Individually, CPA took home several medals. Logan Routh's 82 was good enough for second place while Timothy Finley's 83 landed him in 5th. Garrett Routh's 85 slotted him in 6th Place and Nolan Becerra carded an 87 which landed him in 9th Place.

After their win in Lawrence, the Patriots traveled on April 21 to compete against a strong field in the Osawatomie Invitational at Osawatomie G.C. in Osawatomie, Kan. CPA, without golfer no. 3 Nolan Becerra, shot a combined 322 which put them solidly in second place. Unfortunately for the Patriots, Piper High School brought their A-game to Osaawatomie. Piper shot 306 which put them well ahead of the Patriots and won them the first place trophy. CPA's finish was well ahead of the 13 other teams in the field.

The Patriots had three top ten finishers at Osawatomie. Joey Johnson fired a 5-over 76 to claim 4th Place. Timothy Finley and Logan Routh each carded 10-over 81s which put them in a 10th Place tie. Timothy received the medal after a scorecard playoff.

In both the Veritas and Osawatomie tournaments, No. 5 golfer Garrett Routh stepped up and provided strong showings and gave the Patriots a solid score to enable the team to perform as it did.

This Thursday the Patriots host their own "Christ Prep Invitational" to be held at Ironhorse Golf Club in Leawood, Kansas. Play begins at 10:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.

JV Wins at Eagle Bend

The Christ Prep Patriots took a junior varsity golf team to Lawrence, Kan. yesterday and came away with a win at the Veritas JV Invitational held at Eagle Bend Golf Course.

The Patriots shot a combined 189 during the nine hole contest, held on Eagle Bend's 3,000 yard front side. That score put the Patriots ahead of Bishop Seabury, Central Heights, the Wichita Defenders, and host Veritas.

The Patriots created a logjam at the top of the leaderboard, claiming the top three individual medals. Phoebe Finley birdied no. 9 to claim sole posession of first place. Phoebe's 41 narrowly edged teammates Jacob Bishoff and Sawyer Massing, who both carded 42s. Patriot newcomers Chase Stamatis and Regan Hurley rounded out the CPA JVers. Each performed well in their first outing for the Patriot golf team. Their perfomances sealed the team victory for the squad.

All Patriot golfers will return to action next Thursday as the team hosts the Christ Prep Invitational at Ironhorse Golf Club in Leawood, Kan.

CPA Second at 20-Team Blue Springs South Inv.

The Christ Prep Patriot golf team placed second among the 20-team field yesterday at the Blue Springs South "Janguar Invitational" at Lakewood Oaks C.C. in Lee's Summit, Mo.  The tournament offered the stiffest competition CPA has faced to date, as the field included some of the larger KC metro area schools. The course also offered a tough challenge, as the players negotiated the tight 6,300 yard Lakewood course from the blue tees.

The Patriots shot a combined 325 at the event, which was some 11 strokes behind the winner and host--Blue Springs South.  CPA narrowly edged Ft. Osage for second, as the Indians carded a 326.

Individually, Patriot Joey Johnson once again won medalist. Joey's 3-over 74 tied for first with Blue Springs South's Joe Haines. Joey prevailed, however, in the scorecard playoff. Logan Routh once again turned in a strong performance. Logan's 7-over 78 won a scorecard playoff for 5th place among two other players.

The Patriots will resume action this Thursday as they travel to Hesston, Kans. to compete in the Warrior Invitational.
