The Christ Prep Patriot golf team began its 2015 campaign with a couple of strong showings this past week, taking advantage of some unseasonably mild weather conditions.
Tuesday, the CPA squad began its season at the Cornerstone Invitational at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Topeka. Although the Patriots placed second to the host Cornerstone in the team competition, several solid rounds were delivered by CPA.
Freshman Garrett Clark led the Patriots with an 84, which was good enough for 5th Place in the individual competition. Senior Phoebe Finley's 91 was second for the Patriots, and was good enough for a 10th Place medal.
Christ Prep showed well during the event, especially given that four of its players were making their high school debuts. Besides the scores delivered by Clark and Finley, three players were also in the low-to-mid nineties for the Patriots. Freshman Clark Shaffstall fired a 93 for CPA, while Junior Judah Brown and newcomer Rees Conder delivered 94s for the Christ Prep squad.
CPA's total team score of 362, while well behind Cornerstone's winning mark of 324, provided a comfortable cushion in front of 3rd Place Cair Paravel of Topeka, which tallied a 425. The Wichita Warriors, Wichita Defenders, and Flint Hills Christian (Manhattan) were all above 500 and were in 4th-6th Places, respectively.
Cornerstone dominated the individual medals awarded at the competition, receiving 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, and 9th. Cornerstone senior Josiah Packard was overall medalist, carding a 3-over-par 73 on the 5,900 Cypress Ridge layout. Packard's teammate Noah Frederick shot an 81 which gave him sole possession of second place.
Following the Cornerstone event on Tuesday, Christ Prep traveled to Archie, Mo. Thursday to compete in a nine hole "Tri" match with the Archie Whirlwinds and Butler Bears.
CPA delivered a solid team performance and carded an excellent 161 on the Blackberry Trails layout. Garrett Clark once again led the Patriots, providing a one-over-par 36. Clark's effort earned him overall medalist honors and established him as the only competitor shooting below 40 for the day.
Christ Prep's 161 bettered 2nd Place Butler by 20 strokes. The Bears delivered a 181 while host Archie was close behind, rounding out the team scores with a 3rd Place 187.
Besides Clark's excellent 36, the Patriots carded the 2nd and 3rd best scores as well. Clark Shaffstall and sophomore Daniel Moneymaker each shot five-over 40 on the tight Blackberry Trails track. Judah Brown also delivered a solid 45 for CPA.
The Patriots have little time to rest on their laurels, as they resume action Monday at the Grain Valley Eagle Invitational at Adam's Pointe Golf Club in Blue Springs, Mo.
